Whether you're a beginner or an expert, you'll find that Wild! software offers features and functions that will help you make the most of your interest in birds, butterflies or other wildlife. Plants are part of Wild!'s world, too.

If it flies, walks, hops, crawls, slithers, swims or just sits there and grows, Wild! can help you learn more about it and collect information that is critical to monitoring the health of our Ecosphere.

From list-keeping to collecting and organizing photos to multimedia quizzes that can be appropriate for kids to advanced data recording features that are suitable for serious science, Wild! offers it all.

This software offers multiple tools for analyzing your field data, from Quick Reports to a user-configurable Report engine. You can easily export files for an Excel spreadsheet, for the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology (eBird) or create a file that will create a distribution map in Google Earth.

Click on the bird icon in the lower center portion of the map above to see the diversity of species seen in that spot!

Wild! is available in versions for both Macintosh OSX and Windows. Take it into the field on any laptop!

The XML data format makes it easy to share data with other users or with other data systems.

Start with the free Lite version to try Wild! and upgrade to the Deluxe and Premier versions to enjoy more powerful features.

You'll find support resources and information about product updates in the Wild! User Community. Among the resources we offer are Master Lists of species that you can access from within Wild! itself. The Wild! project team firmly believes that records for wild species should be "free range" -- we don't charge extra for access to more basic data.

4/15/12 Version 2.16 is released.

. Major new improvements include:

• Area-based observations. No longer must you report a wildlife Species to create a dataset record. If you're involved in Management of areas -- do you monitor nesting boxes or do habitat improvement projects? -- Wild! can now help you track your efforts.

• Custom Fields are now extended to all of the "objects" in Wild! Create custom data fields for Species, Areas, Trips, Habitats AND Actions and have those fields included in your observation Records EXACTLY the way you want them to be applied. Need to record male/female count for a grouse lek and adult/immature for eagle sightings? No problem. Use the new "Include" checkbox to apply your custom fields only for certain Species/Areas/Habitats/Actions or apply them globally.

This new feature will also help you track Subspecies.

"Is Wild! an 'App'?"

We suspect that many folks who arrive at our site are looking for a new App for their smartphone or specialized tablet computer -- perhaps you're one of them.

The short answer is "no, Wild! is not an app", but we hope you'll take a look at the following 10 reasons we think you should consider adopting Wild! as your wildlife field software. Its been optimized for easy use on a Windows slate/tablet PC, so you can still enjoy all of its features on a compact field device!

1. Wide range of life forms.

There are a number of great birding apps out there, but Wild! will stick with you if your interests branch out to other things like butterflies, dragonflies or plants.

2. Multimedia Library.

The Wild! Multimedia Library gives you all the flexibility to build your own multimedia library that best fits your needs. Easily add your own photo and sound content from the Internet and automatically organize your field photos -- the MediaSynch feature is designed to complement your Eye-Fi equipped camera!

Wild! will automatically organize your photos by Species, specific Observation records or Trips.

3. Google Earth Maps.

Sharing lists of your observations is a lot more fun if you can share them in map form. Wild! makes it easy to create Google Earth Maps that show SO much more than a simple list can.

You can even import Google Earth Maps to create new Areas in your Wild! dataset.

If you need to do sophisticated GIS mapping, Wild! easily exports your data in the .kml format that is easily converted to different GIS data file formats.

4. Education and Entertainment.

We didn't invent the idea of quizzes that make it fun to learn about wild things. We just give you complete control over the content of an entertaining array of supported quizzes, including photos, sounds and more sophisticated habitat-related quizzes.

5. Custom Data.

If you want to record digital data beyond the "basics" in the field, you need Wild! Create as many custom data fields as you need and include all that data in configurable Reports.

6. GPS Integration.

We've covered GPS Integration from Basic to Sophisticated.

When you record a field observation with an inexpensive GPS receiver connected to your slate/tablet PC or a laptop, the coordinates of that observation are recorded.

A TripMonitor feature can automatically determine if you're in a defined area and record your observation in that area.

7. Routes.

Wild!'s TripMonitor tool leverages your GPS to help you navigate to specific Areas, but we don't stop there.

The concept of Routes is built right in. It's an especially important feature for doing Point counts or for monitoring a "trail" of nesting boxes.

8. GIS Tools.

GPS integration was an important advance in Wild!, but in using it in the field we soon discovered that there is sometimes a need to record more sophisticated field data.

Very precise GPS fixes are sometimes desirable. So is the ability to map shapes or transect lines.

Traditionally, that's been a job for very expensive field equipment. Now you can do the same tasks with Wild! by using the GIS Tools available in the Premier edition.

9. Sharing Data.

There are lots of Internet newsgroups and forums out there that are loaded with accounts of field trips. What was seen and where, presented in list form.

While you can still generate those lists from Wild!, producing user-friendly Google Earth Maps is just as easy. They're a lot more interesting than a list, too.

Wild! also makes it easy to compile date from Team-oriented field efforts like Christmas Bird Counts and BioBlitzes. Instead of taking hours or days to compile data for multiple field teams, Wild! can do it in minutes using a special Merge feature.

Entire datasets can be shared between users, regardless of what kind of computer they use.

10. Historical data.

The key to making your historical data most useful is the ability to store lots of data. Our own field datasets have thousands of Species and/or Locations, with many thousands of individual Observations. No need to browse through piles of field notebooks to find a FOY date for 2009 to compare it to this year's date -- its all there at your fingertips in Wild!
